Waste Management

Radioactive Waste System

Despite The fact that Namibia has promulgated Regulations for radioactive waste management, Namibia has not yet established an active programme on radioactive waste management at National Level. The Regulations obligates Operators to make provision for interim storage facility with appropriate safety and security features on-site.

Another option is for the operator to enter into a contractual agreement with the Supplier to receive the source back after its useful lifetime within one year of the recipient requesting for such return. The process is underway to identify a suitable site for the establishment of a facility for storage, processing and conditioning of radioactive waste.

Radioactive waste of shorter half- lives are kept in stores until decay to an Authorised clearance level, thereafter disposed of as general waste. Radioactive waste generated as a result of mining activities are normally disposed of at tailings facilities on mine sites, where safety and security measures adopted are approved by the Authority.
