The Board Members

The members of the Board were appointed by the Minister of Health and Social Services in February 2009 for a term of three years. Representation on the Board is from Government Ministries, including the Ministry of Mines and Energy; Health and Social Service; Labour and Social Welfare; Environment and Tourism; Foreign Affairs; and Office of the President and a private individual who is well versed with radiation and nuclear related matters.

Chairperson Statement

The current Atomic Energy Board members were appointed in January 2020 to serve for a period of three years, with a term of office ending in January 2023. The Board functions are provided in the Atomic Energy and Radiation Protection Act, Act 5 of 2005, which among others is to advise the government ministries, department, and agencies, as well as regional and local authorities on all matters relating to radiation and radiation sources, including the economy.

Functions of the Board

The mandate of the Atomic Energy Board is to advice Government and any other persons or institution in Namibia on matters relating to radiation sources and nuclear energy, including amongst others to:

  • Recommend regulations and standards that must be complied with in order to ensure adequate protection of workers, patients, public and the environment against the harmful effects of radiation exposure;
  • advise the Minister on matters relating to radiation protection, radiation sources, radioactive materials, radioactive waste and prescribed non-ionising radiation sources;
  • Make recommendations to relevant persons and the Government related to the promotion of peaceful uses of atomic energy and related research on radiation safety issues advice and recommend to organs of the State how to co-ordinate emergency response and the assistance required in the case of a radiation related emergency;
  • Maintain contact for information exchange and co-operation with other bodies in Namibia, regulatory bodies of other countries and relevant international organisations in particular, with regard to treaties and conventions entered into between the Government of the Republic of Namibia and those countries and organisations, particularly on radiation or nuclear safety.
