Review and Assessment

Review and Assessment is the process and result of analysing systematically and evaluating the hazard associated with the sources and practice, and associated protection and safety measure (Ref: IAEA Glossary)

When is Review and Assessment required?

An assessment is required to evaluate the safety measure associated with a particular radiation source and to ascertain that the applicant is able to conduct the proposed activity with adequate protection. Therefore an assessment will be performed in the following cases

  • When a new application is made for registration or licensing including renewals of application
  • When an application is made in support of a modification of the practice, processes, design structure, etcn

What is an inspection?

An inspection is an examination, measurement, observation or test undertaken to assess structure,

systems, components, materials as well as operational activities, technical processes, organizational

processes procedures and competencies. (Ref: IAEA Glossary)

When is an inspection necessary?

An inspection is required before approval of an application for a registration or licensing as required

under Section 19(2) and Section 21(2). This pre‐registration or pre‐licensing generic safety assessment are intended to ascertain compliance of the facility design, equipment installations as well as related operating procedures with prescribed requirements. Therefore the pre‐registration and pre‐licensing generic safety assessment will be part of the review and assessment programme.

An inspection is also required to ascertain compliance with the requirements in case a registrant or

license holder has applied for a renewal of the registration or license as required under Section 25(2) of the Act.

In cases where there is a modification to the practice, then an inspection is also necessary to evaluate compliance with the requirements. In addition to the above an inspection may be conducted anytime during the licensing period to ascertain continued compliance with the requirements. In addition to the regular monitor this kind of inspection may be also be prompted by information provided to the Authority about unsafe practices or history of non‐compliance by certain registrants or license holders.
